The Bosozoku (literally: "violent running gangs") were bad news in '70's Japan, they were aggressive, anti-authority and a recruiting ground for the Yazuka (Japanese mafia). Their bikes reflected this and were built to outrage/ offend mainstream society. Usually based around home market 250s and 400s (anything bigger being massively expensive), a typical custom job would involve:
- bending the licence plate in half to make it harder to read (or removing it completely),
- angling the indicators upwards (no idea where that came from),
- fitting a new seat,
- fitting an apocalyptically loud exhaust,
- splashing on a custom paint job,
- fitting bars that actually made it harder to control the bike,
- fitting extra horns and/ or PA systems,
- fitting a pole to the front forks to allow a flag to be flown (usually at a standstill but, for the truly dedicated/ deranged, on the move as well),
- if you had a few yen lying around, fitting weird body kits, and
- making sure your trusty baseball bat was readily accessible.
This is a pretty mild version of a Bosozoku bike but the last shot shows some more extreme versions that I built a long time ago.
