The Flying Dutchman F/C A mint kit from my stash, but the decals were iffy. I had to replace all the tires- the fronts were dried out, stiff and even somewhat brittle- don't see that very often; the slicks were a little deformed. Glass was ok. The multi-piece body was a P.I.A., a lot of filling and sanding like I was making an AWB conversion! Redid the blower scoop with Revell Chrome spray. In different pictures the 1:1 seems like either a shade of green or blue, I don't know if that's lighting or actually different paint during it's racing life. The MPC model boxart looks like something inbetween, so I went for both trying to emulate the 1:1 car and doing a close to boxart build. Paint is a silver base, then a mixture of Tamiya Light Pearl Blue and Pearl Green, Wet Look clear. I used what I could of the original decals that didn't fall apart, and some replacement decals (that didn't come with every one needed) and some of the same sponsor, but Slixx decals. I used only one substitute sponsor, so that was good. The white stripe decals were no good, so those I did with Tamiya Pure White paint. Tail light done with Sharpies. It's about as close as I can come to boxart and replica. I think it's just such a cool car, that I HAD to get around to building one. Comments welcome!

Now that's a great looking drag car! And a sharp build of a super rare kit! And some excellent work on hiding the bodywork seams! Can you tell I love it?

It's one I've looked forward to building for a long time- also the Charger lll, the non-drag car version...sometime.

I think the paint is pretty close to the boxart. It was in fact a real funny car, something very different!

I'm confused. I thought Funny Car body's had to be based, albeit loosely, around a production car but I'd have to squint really hard to see something from Detroit in that shape. A Corvette perhaps? Anyone know what the story here is?

Anyone know what the story here is? I know the story well. Dodge built the Charger lll in '68 as a concept car for the Chicago Auto Show (see pic). Three bodies were built- one painted gold/yellow, another red, and the third with no livery. The first two were eventually crushed (for shame!) and the last acquired by Al Vander Woude and turned into the funny car. Concept car At the Auto Show Publicity photo The Flying Dutchman Funny Car MPC did both the funny car, which I just built, and the concept car, which I will get around to building sometime- it's on the to-do list!

Thanks for the history lesson Dave. It still seems an odd choice to base a race car around a concept shell but, as I said in my first post, it did make for a great looking race car!

Hey Dave if ever get around to building the concept car maybe you could build a drag team That's a GREAT idea, Joe! Never thought of that. I've got a spare trailer. I'm gonna do just that, and you're getting credit for the idea. Won't be for a bit, I've got several builds on the table right now. Thanks for the suggestion!

I got the Charger lll non drag car out to build, and a trailer. I think, instead of a decal ON the car, I may make a sign to display with the build for the Joe's Show N' Go! or Joe's Racing- Where Show Meets Go! Haven't decided yet. BTW, for the visitors here; the Dutchman build here was featured in the first issue of Scott Colmer's new mag, Auto Modeler-
