[glow=red,2,300]MUD BUG!!![/glow] A Muddy New Project! I am modifying Revells Killer Bee to look more like a Deals Wheels "Hum Bug" Off-Road VW Buggy. The Hum Bug Kits are pretty hard to find, so I thought I might make my own VW Buggy. I will be trying some Extreme Weathering on the Mud Bug, any suggestions welcome! Most of the parts for the Mud Bug Project come from Revells Killer Bee & Porsche 911 Kits. Tires and other odd parts will be coming from the Deals Wheels Van Kit. Let's Get Started...

[glow=red,2,300]BODY MODS For MUD BUG!!![/glow] Before I started taking photos, I shortened the body about 1.5 inches: .5 inches from the doors, .5 inches from behind the doors and another .5 inches from the hood area... Here is what the Mud Bug looks like next to a stock VW...

[glow=red,2,300]MOVING FENDERS...[/glow] I cut off the front fenders so I could shorten the sides .5 inches. Then I glued them back on about .5 inches back... Next I cut out the excess plastic, in front of the Front Fenders.

[glow=red,2,300]TOP FITTING....[/glow] You can see in this photo that there is an .5 inch wide section of the roof that does not fit well. I didn't glue this section in yet... I cut the section out and carved it a little to make it fit nice and tight! I also carved the side windows out a bit...

[glow=red,2,300]MOVIN' MORE FENDERS...[/glow] I cut most of the rear fender off the body... Then I raised the top edge of the fender and glued it in place about .25 inches higher. This will give me more room for the BiG Rear Tires!

[glow=red,2,300]EXTENDING THE FENDERS...[/glow] I cut some .25 inch wide plastic strip to fit and glued them to the front fenders... Then I cut 2 more .25 inch wide strips and glued them to the rear fenders...

[glow=red,2,300]MAKIN' WIDE FENDERS!!![/glow] I cut 2 lengths of .25 strip plastic to fit the fenders. Then I bent the plastic, as round as I could, and glued one strip to each rear fender. Next I cut 2 lengths of 8th inch plastic strip for the front fenders and glued them in place... I also made New Wide Running Boards from strip plastic! Another View... We Have Fenders Now...

[glow=red,2,300]MUD SPOILER!!![/glow] I applied Squadron Putty to Mud Bugs rough spots and sanded it smooth with 220 grade sandpaper. Next I cut a .5 inch strip of plastic the width of the rear fenders. Then I attached the strip to the rear fenders as shown. The New Rear Spoiler also serves as a BiG Mud Flap! ...

[glow=red,2,300]BUG SCOOP!!![/glow] I used one of the Supercharger Scoops from a Polar Lights "Willy Wild" for the Roof Scoop on the Mud Bug! The First coat of Primer!!! Now I can see what other body work needs to be done...

[glow=red,2,300]HI BLOATATION TIRES!!![/glow] The Front Deals Wheels tires are a different style than the Huge "HI BLOATATION" Tires for the rear. So I made New "HI BLOATATION" Front Tires, a little smaller than the rears. I made them from Resin Deals Wheels Tires Inserts, made by fellow modeler Ward Sharke. I took 2 inserts and cut a 3/8 inch slice from one of them... Next I glued the 2 Inserts together. Then I cut a strip of sheet plastic for the tire thread. After the Tire Thread was glued in, I sanded it smooth and sprayed the New Tires with Grey Filler/Primer!

[glow=red,2,300]GOT THE HOOD!!![/glow] The Killer Bee VW kit had only a Tarp Cover on the front. I found an extra VW Hood in the Parts Box, so I decided to put a Hood on Mud Bug! I Carved and Fit the Hood Area untill I got a tight fit on the top edge of the Hood. Here is the Hood glued in place. The VW Hood is longer than the shortened Mud Bug front end, so I bent the bottom of the Hood in about 1/4" and attached it with Zap-A-Gap. Then I carved about 1/8" from the bottom edge of the Hood.

[glow=red,2,300]SUPER-TURBO CHARGED!!![/glow] I started collecting Engine Parts! Most came from the Porsche Kit, the Big Tuba Exhaust is from the Deals Wheels Van and the rest are from the parts box... Here is the first Mock-Up. Turbo-Charged Six Cylinder Porsche Engine with a BiG Supercharger Too! Here it is with the BiG Pipe! This Should Be Fun...

[glow=red,2,300]CHASSIS FOR THE BUG!!![/glow] I removed about a half an inch from the chassis and glued it back together... I cut the rear of the chassis and added about a quarter inch strip of plastic to raise it to the right height. The fit is perfect for the back of the Mud Bug, the front will need a little trimming. I think I will add strips to the sides to increase the gluing surface to the body. I added strips of plastic to brace the new chassis...

[glow=red,2,300]WORKIN' ON THE ENGINE!!![/glow] Here is the 911 Engine with a little paint and spark plug lines... I cut out part of the exhaust system and replaced it with one large pipe. This will give me a good posiion for mounting the BiG "TUBA" Pipe! Here it is with the New Supercharger attached! I used some of "The Detailer" Black Wash to bring out the details...

[glow=red,2,300]INTERIOR PANEL...[/glow] I added strips of plastic to the sides of the chassis to increase the glueing area to the body. I also cut away a little of the chassis to clear the front tires. The Interior Panel is too big for the New Hood so..I'll need to cut it down a little... I cut a wedge section from the Interior Panel... Then I glued it back together and into the body! See how the bottom edge of the Interior Panel rest on the top- front of the chasssis. The body will attach to the chassis here!

[glow=red,2,300]SKID PLATE!!![/glow] The Rear Skid Plate turned out to be a Great way to mount the Engine and the BiG Rear Tires. I started by making a "T" shaped piece of plastic to fill the depressed area in the rear. Then I glued it in place. I added 2 strips of half-round strip plastic on the Skid Plate and glued in in it's new location! I made a small piece of plastic to fit on the front of the Skid Plate to make it smoother... Here it is in place. Both the Engine and Big Rear Tires will mount right here!
